My name is Irma Octavia Chaniago, but you can just call me Irma. My greatest passion in life is painting an art that has been part of me for as long as I can remember. For me, painting is not just a hobby; it’s a language of emotion, a way to express feelings that words often fail to describe. I was born in Medan, a city often nicknamed the “Gotham City” of Indonesia for its lively chaos and strong character. Growing up there shaped my creativity, but I eventually moved to Surabaya to find a calmer environment and new inspiration for my art.
Don’t get
distracted by my last name, “Chaniago.” It sounds Minangkabau, but the truth is
a little different my father simply gave me that name even though the
Minangkabau bloodline actually comes from the paternal side, which means it’s
technically “disconnected” in my case. Still, I’ve learned to see it as part of
my identity, a small twist in my personal story that makes me unique.
When I paint, the
world slows down. The strokes of color on the canvas feel like a conversation
between my soul and the universe. Every brushstroke tells a story sometimes
about peace, sometimes about chaos, but always about life. Painting has taught
me patience, mindfulness, and the beauty of imperfection. It’s not just an
activity I do; it’s a part of who I am. My dream is to one day hold an art
exhibition that captures not only my journey as an artist but also the emotions
and stories of the people I’ve met along the way. Because for me, painting is
more than art it’s a reflection of the heart.
